Rock N' Learn

“How come you can learn all the words to songs, but you can’t learn your school work?!” How many frustrated parents have asked their kids that question?

Once a child falls behind in school, it becomes extremely hard for them to catch up. As a child looks around the classroom and notices that other kids quickly understand the subject matter, confidence begins to wane. The problems at hand, which once seemed small, stack up and become overwhelming and feel paralyzing.

Believe it or not, music can actually help – with catchy tunes, a child learn math, improve vocabulary and even introduce them to science. The trick is to turn kids’ love of music into a learning tool at an early age and use that tool throughout their development.

In the mid-80s, brothers Richard and Brad Caudle (one a school psychologist and the other a musician/composer) teamed to create Rock ‘N Learn. Over 20 years later, Rock ‘N Learn has grown to be the country's #1 educational video program, used in millions of homes and schools nationwide.

Unanimously praised by educators, parents and the media, Rock ‘N Learn has earned awards from prestigious organizations such as iParenting, Learning Magazine Teachers’ Choice, Parents’ Choice, Dr. Toy and The National Parenting Center’s Seal of Approval – to name a few.

My Opinion:

As a Homeschooler I still deal with self confidence issues. Oldest is always upset because he is behind some of his other friends and because he just doesn't get math as easily as Youngest. Youngest gets discouraged because he doesn't get reading as easily as Oldest. We have dealt with more issues over Youngest's reading problems than with Oldestest's math problems beacause reading affects so many other things. He needs help reading some instructions, stories for other subjects and math word problems. He is plugging along but boy was I excited to see the Rock 'N Learn videos. Youngest LOVES music so I knew these would be a hit and they are! I catch him singing the different sounds when he gets stumped with something. As a somewhat conservative Christian the beat is a bit much for me. It is a very rocky type music, which we normally don't allow the children to listen too so we've had some issues with that but overall I think it is a very good product. Youngest is definitely learning from it. After viewing and mastering both DVD's I believe a child would be ready for 2nd grade work. You would probably want to throw in a workbook of some kind just to insure they actually know how to put what they learn on tv to use but I believe this could be used as a 1st grade phonics program along with a few books from your local library for practice.

About the Phonics Volume 1 DVD

Practicing the phonics skills that lead to reading and spelling success is more fun than ever. Rock ‘N Learn has turbocharged their best-selling Phonics program with new, enhanced animation along with sentence and story practice. Catchy rhymes make rules easy to remember. their reading and pronunciation. Read-along stories and fun songs provide practice with rules and build reading fluency. Context clues help students develop multiple strategies to read for meaning. Busy parents and teachers love the way Rock ‘N Learn Phonics captures kids’ attention and allows for differentiated instruction through independent practice.
